Penn Museum Redesign Aims Beyond Academics

The Penn Museum, geared towards becoming “a more public institution” has reinstalled its galleries with thousands of artifacts that have previously been in storage.

The museum has also created a program for immigrants and refugees from Africa, Central America, Mexico, Iraq, and Syria to guide visitors through the museum and speak about the collections of antiquities from their native countries. [The New York Times]

The Daniel Dietrich II Director, ICA – University of Pennsylvania

Job Description Summary

The Daniel Dietrich II Director communicates an exciting and workable vision for the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), grounded in its unique history as a cutting-edge Kunsthalle. Reporting directly to the Vice Provost for Faculty, the Director closely oversees the day to day operations of the ICA, including general administration, curatorial functions, public engagement, strategic planning, and fundraising and development. The Director carefully supervises the ICA staff and staff supervisors, including, the hiring, training, mentoring, performance management, and firing of staff. The Director leads a curatorial team which mounts exhibitions; chooses artists and works; writes catalogues; oversees design; and markets exhibitions to other institutions.

 

Job Description

The Director works transparently and accountably with the Office of the Provost and University on personnel management, planning, budgeting & financial performance. The Director works collaboratively with Penn’s twelve schools and their faculties, especially the faculty of the Weitzman School of Design and the School of Arts and Sciences, to develop undergraduate, graduate and professional student programs which leverage ICA’s exhibitions and facilities. The ICA Director establishes and maintains partnerships with Directors of other arts and culture centers within University to coordinate exhibition and education programs and to share expertise.

The Director works with the ICA & University development offices to plan and implement annual & major gift solicitations; and works with local and national funding community to develop, submit and fund grants in support of exhibitions and ICA operations. The Director works in close communication with an Advisory Board of Overseers to review overall operations, formulate policies, and develop giving strategies and program initiatives to fulfill the ICA’s mission.

Finally, the Director represents ICA at community, professional and academic events, conferences, and meetings to strengthen relationships with cultural leaders and expand interest in and support for the ICA.

Specific duties include:

  • Oversee development of exhibitions for ICA; work with curatorial staff in developing long-range calendar of exhibits. Market exhibitions to
  • other institutions. May develop & mount exhibitions; choose artists & work; write catalogues; oversee design.
  • Represent ICA to community & at professional & academic events, conferences, conventions & other events to strengthen relationships with
  • cultural & University leaders; present lectures, or participate in seminars to expand interest & support.
  • Establish & maintain contact with directors of other institutions & centers within University to plan, coordinate, or consolidate exhibition &
  • education programs & to leverage development, marketing & technology expertise.
  • Work with schools, departments, faculty and arts centers  to develop undergraduate, graduate and professional student programs academic programs.
  • Work with advisory board chair, members & committees to formulate policies & review overall operations.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree or other advanced degree preferably in an art-related field, plus 5-7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience; strong background in contemporary art; experience as director or curator of museum, gallery or exhibition hall; previous administrative experience including budget management; previous experience supervising staff, preferably at all levels; previous successful fundraising experience, both in areas of foundation & corporate support & individual giving; preference will be given to candidates with appropriate credentials to qualify for academic appointment. Must be able to work nights/weekends and travel as may be required.

The Assistant Registrar works under the supervision of the Senior Registrar to act as Collections Liaison for galleries and exhibitions (maintenance of object list, coordination of object access and movement); to carry out object processing (digital record creation, physical numbering, measuring, photography); to do condition reporting; to make courier arrangements for outgoing loans; and to provide collections-related support as necessary to collections staff.
