American Monument to open at the University of California Irvine

American Monument, an exhibition by artist lauren woods about the brutality African-Americans face from the police, will run from October 5, 2019 to February 8, 2020 at the University of California Irving’s Beall Center for Art + Technology. After closing, the exhibition, “nomadic and continually expanding” will be “‘unveiled’ at universities, museums, storefronts, community centers, and churches” across the United States. This exhibition reopens after a year of being on pause at Cal State Long Beach’s Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum, by request of the artist, and due to controversy over former director Kimberli Meyer’s dismissal days after the exhibition opened initially.

Job Summary:
The Assistant Director for Museum Registration and Collections Management is a key contributor responsible for overseeing all aspects of care, safety, handling, and documentation of the University’s art collection and artwork on loan. The position develops and implements management standards, policies, and procedures. Oversees the registration system and collections’ data integrity. Oversees the rights and reproduction, registration and collections management units and serves on the disaster planning, risk management, and collections committees. The Assistant Director helps educate gallery staff, students, and other interested parties on best practices and contributes to the proper development of all museum and institute exhibitions and programs. Because the Institute and Museum for California Art is the first museum on campus, this position is also responsible for advising unit leadership on all risk management aspects of the collection. Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives, the position interacts with both internal and external stakeholders.
