Princeton University Art Museum seeks a Gallery Assistant for Art@Bainbridge, a space for installations by emerging contemporary artists in the ground-floor galleries of one of the few remaining eighteenth-century structures in downtown Princeton. The Gallery Assistant acts as a liaison with contracted artists and manages all aspects from organization to implementation, including installation and de-installation. These public exhibitions are conceived by Art Museum curators and the opening dates and events are planned in coordination with the Art Museum’s Senior Management. The Gallery Assistant reports to the Manager of Exhibition Services and is a member of the Preparator’s Office, from which the position receives guidance and support. This is a part-time (60%), two-year term position with the possibility of extension.

The Gallery Assistant is responsible for coordinating gallery displays (including, but not limited to, installation-based works, time-based media, prints, drawings, photographs, and paintings), on time and on budget, for the 870 square feet of Art@Bainbridge. The incumbent generates artist contracts based on curator-approved checklists and database records; pursues and tracks correspondence with artists, curators, and other Art Museum staff as appropriate; manages loan receipts, logistics, invoices, and expenses; and maintains accurate object records in the Museum’s electronic collections management system (The Museum System).

This is a hands-on position: the Gallery Assistant arranges the round-trip transportation of loaned works; directly supports the gallery activities of receiving, unpacking, condition reporting, and installing works of art, and is required to be on site for the de-installation, packing, and release of fine art shipments. It is the responsibility of the Gallery Assistant to identify and understand potential and real workplace hazards to the art objects, personnel, and visitors. Additionally, the Gallery Assistant is responsible for seasonal gallery maintenance and lighting adjustments, preparing gallery furniture and mounts, administering construction documents for pedestals, and maintaining an inventory of packing materials and light fixtures.


  • A Bachelor degree
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a museum or gallery setting
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently
  • Maintain and prioritize workflow, communications, and output
  • Keen sense of mission and institutional goals
  • Strong computer skills are essential: expert facility with MS Office, including Word and Outlook, and familiarity with The Museum System database preferred
  • Knowledge of art handling standards and practices, as well as gallery-level packing and transportation standards
  • Demonstrated experience handling paintings, sculpture, works on paper, textiles, and decorative arts preferred
  • General knowledge of art history preferred
  • High level of discretion related to protecting confidential information
  • Familiarity with matting, hinging and framing requirements
  • Comfortable climbing ladders
  • The ability to dead-lift 50 pounds is required and the successful applicant must pass a mandatory physical aptitude test
  • Finalist will be required to successfully complete a background check and pre-employment physical
