An Inquiry from Celka Straughn about Advisory Groups for Long-Term Installations

Subject: community advisory groups for long-term installations

Dear colleagues,

In the next few years, the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas will reinstall its four collection galleries. As we develop plans for the new long-term (multi-year) exhibitions, we want to solicit audience input to inform our work. Have any of you conducted audience surveys, focus groups, or otherwise engaged audiences with the development of long-term collection installations?

Any feedback you could provide on your approach or lessons learned would be very helpful, including how you gathered information from your audiences, what aspects of the exhibitions audiences weighed in on, how early in the planning process you invited audience input, how well you were able to integrate audience insights into your plans, etc. Hiring a firm or outside consultant is not an option at this point, so we’d be especially grateful for any thoughts about how to do this work internally using our own staff and resources.

Many thanks,

Celka Straughn
